Monterey Regional Waste Management District

The Monterey Regional Waste Management District (MRWMD) is a Joint Powers District formed by Monterey County, Pebble Beach Community Services District and the Cities of Carmel, Seaside, Del Rey Oaks, Sand City, Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Marina, California. The MRWMD operates a landfill, MRF, and composting operation at their regional facility in Marina, California. The District’s Board approved an agreement with Zero Waste Energy to furnish and install a SmartFerm system at the facility under a 5 year demonstration program. ZWE is providing the system at no charge to the MRWMD. ZWE will receive the tipping fee revenue for the food waste and yard waste processed at the facility along with the revenues on the electrical power sales to the adjacent waste water treatment plant. The 5,000 ton per year system will be a four digester SmartFerm plus an aeration bay for the storage of the incoming food waste from local routes. The MRWMDis anticipating a growth in the organic waste collection and the production of organic residuals from the planned MRF expansion. Thus, a larger system is planned for the future.
